Precise determination of seawater calcium using isotope dilution inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry

Analyst, 2014, 734-741, doi:10.1039/c3an01948a
Calcium ion [Ca2+] is one of the seawater's most important major cations and is closely involved in the oceanic carbonate system sensitive to the global carbon cycle. Therefore, high precision [Ca2+] determination techniques are really essential. Here we establish an accurate method for precisely determining Ca in seawater by 44Ca/43Ca ID-ICP-MS.
The conventional [Ca2+] titration method could be biased by co-existing divalent ions (i.e., Mg2+ and Sr2+). The ID-ICP-MS technique is free from any potential spectral interference and low blanks and makes it a direct approach to precisely analyze [Ca2+] in seawater.
A precision of better than 0.05% for within-run and 0.10% for duplicate measurements of the IAPSO seawater standard was achieved using 10 mL solutions with a measuring time of fewer than 3 minutes.
